Before you go

Best time to go
All year. The ceremony runs daily before sunset, so the start time shifts with the seasons.
Road and weather
The drive runs east along the GT Road past Shalimar Gardens to the border. Traffic builds in the hour before the ceremony, and security checks near the gate take time, so leave Lahore early. Cars park some distance from the stands and the last part is on foot.
Tolls
There are no motorway tolls on this route. Parking near the border, if charged, is paid at actual cost.

The daily flag lowering ceremony at the Wagah Border is one of Lahore’s most memorable evenings: crowds cheering in the stands, Rangers in full uniform marching high-stepped to the gate, and the flags coming down at sunset. It is a short drive from the city, but timing matters.

The drive

From central Lahore, the driver heads east along the GT Road, past Shalimar Gardens and through Batapur to the border, about 25 km in total. From Lahore Cantt and Askari it is a little closer, and the Ring Road can save time from DHA.

In normal traffic it takes 40 to 50 minutes, but the last few kilometres slow down in the hour before the ceremony as cars, buses and coaches arrive together.

Timing your visit

  • The ceremony starts shortly before sunset, so the time shifts with the seasons. Check the sunset time for your date.
  • Arrive early: aim to reach the parking area at least an hour and a half before sunset. Security checks and the walk to the stands take time, and good seats fill up.
  • Getting out: after the ceremony, thousands of people leave at once. The driver waits at an agreed spot so you do not wander the car park looking for the car.

What to carry

  • CNIC for Pakistani visitors, passport for foreign visitors.
  • Phone and wallet only. Bags are usually not allowed through security, so leave them in the car.
  • Water, especially in summer, and a light jacket in December and January.

Make an evening of it

Combine the ceremony with a stop at Shalimar Gardens on the way, the Mughal garden on the GT Road, or dinner in the city on the way back. Families with children sometimes add Jallo Park, which is also on the eastern side of Lahore.

Choosing a car

For a family of four, a Toyota Corolla or Honda City with a driver is perfect. With elders or more people, a Honda BR-V seats seven. School groups, office outings and visiting delegations travel together in a Toyota Hiace or coaster, which also makes parking easier. See our car rental with driver for how city bookings work.

Lahore to Wagah Border: questions

How far is the Wagah Border from Lahore?

About 25 km from central Lahore along the GT Road, or around 40 to 50 minutes in normal traffic. From Lahore Cantt it is a little closer.

What time does the Wagah Border ceremony start?

The flag lowering ceremony takes place every day shortly before sunset, so the time moves through the year, earlier in winter and later in summer. Aim to arrive at least an hour and a half before sunset to clear security and find a seat.

Do I need any documents for the Wagah ceremony?

Carry your CNIC if you are Pakistani, or your passport if you are a foreign visitor. Security checks are thorough, and foreign visitors are often seated in a separate enclosure.

Can I take a bag into the ceremony?

Keep it to a phone and wallet. Bags are usually not allowed through security, so leave them in the car with the driver.

Is this an outstation trip?

No. The Wagah Border is on the edge of Lahore, so the trip is usually booked as a normal Lahore city day or a few hours with a driver. We confirm this in your quote.
